Matthew Murphy

Overview

Following a distinguished 27-year career as an Assistant Somerset County Prosecutor, Matthew Murphy comes to Parker McCay with a wealth of jury trial and appellate advocacy experience to support our many clients’ requirements.

As a Senior Assistant Prosecutor and Trial Team Leader, Matt was responsible for investigating and prosecuting a large criminal case load that included murder, vehicular homicide, kidnapping, burglaries, racketeering, money laundering, firearms and other violations of our Criminal and Tax Codes.  Matt tried more than 65 Indictments to petit juries during his career resulting in extensive experience conducting direct and cross-examination of all matter of lay and expert witnesses.  During that period, Matt supervised more than 1,000 criminal investigations that included the use of Court-Authorized Electronic Surveillance, Wiretaps, GPS Orders, cell tower dumps, and Orders permitting law enforcement downloads of vehicle Event Data Recorders.  Matt presided over hundreds of State & County Grand Jury proceedings, disposed of more than 500 Indictments through plea agreements along with a wealth of appellate experience before the Superior Court, Appellate Division, New Jersey Supreme Court, and the United States District Court.

During his career, Matt was Certified as an Instructor by the New Jersey Police Training Commission and taught criminal law courses to recruits and experienced police officers at the Somerset County Police Academy and New Jersey State Police Academy in Sea Girt.  His knowledge and easy manner make him a frequent target for speaker engagement requests.  Matt has been recognized and honored for his dedication to law enforcement and crime victims by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, Somerset County Crime Stoppers, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office PBA Local #221, and the New Jersey Security Association.  Matt is most proud of having been twice recognized as a “MADD Hero” at the Annual Law Enforcement Recognition Ceremony sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

 Prior to arriving at Parker McCay, Matt was employed as a Senior Claims Specialist with a large commercial insurance carrier.  Holding an All-Lines Insurance Adjuster license, Matt was responsible for managing a caseload of litigated claims for personal injury, property damage, and product liability actions in all 50 States and Washington, D.C.  Whether litigating in State or Federal Court, Matt actively engaged in settlement negotiations that often included Mediation and Arbitration Hearings.

 Matt received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland in College Park, and a Juris Doctor degree with Distinction from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan.  Following his return to New Jersey, Matt became the first Law Clerk to the Honorable Helen E. Hoens, J.S.C., who sat in the Civil Division at the Somerset County Court House.  Matt is licensed to practice law in the State of New Jersey and our Federal District Courts.

 Matt lives with his wife Jill and their rescue dog Biscuit in Hunterdon County.  Their daughter and fiancé reside in Bridgewater.  Matt & Jill regularly attend MLB Spring Training games in Tampa, Florida.  Both are avid boaters.
