Overview
Knowing that local governments have a direct impact on the everyday lives of the public drove Alexis Smith’s avid interest in municipal and government law. Issues relating to public services, infrastructure, public safety, and other complex matters are the responsibility of local governments. Alexis appreciates that the legal issues challenging these entities can be wide-ranging and complicated. To her, it makes this area of practice especially diverse and exciting.
She discovered her passion for the law in a Constitutional Law course at The College of New Jersey where she received her Bachelor of Arts in political science. She had such a favorable reaction to this course; she decided to pursue a career in law. Motivated by her new intention, she continued her post-graduate education at Rutgers Law School. Not only did Alexis become a strong critical thinker able to identify and avoid risk, but she also worked hard to learn the language of the law and perfect her legal writing skills.
Her aptitude for writing and natural leadership abilities led Alexis to serve as both a staff editor and an executive editor for the Rutgers University Law Review while working toward her Juris Doctor.
In 2019, Alexis demonstrated a firm commitment to her goals by skipping spring break and travelling with other Rutgers law students to New Orleans to provide pro bono legal services to Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS) where she focused on landlord-tenant conflicts.
Her judicial clerkship with the Honorable Jeanne T. Covert in the Superior Court of New Jersey complemented her law school education. This clerkship solidified her decision to concentrate on municipal law, as she witnessed legal proceedings related to local government firsthand.
Alexis is deeply proud of her Burlington County, New Jersey upbringing. As an extremely accomplished high school and college athlete, she enjoys local sports and gives back to the community by coaching young athletes on the fundamentals of her beloved field hockey as well as on the basics of working hard and becoming confident young women.
To support the legal community and continue to grow professionally, Alexis is an active member of the Burlington County Bar Association as well as the New Jersey Bar Association.
